There are many exam of Italian languages in Italy, offered by different istitutions, schools, universities. In Italy, as in other countries, no exam is officially recognised by the State, by the Ministry of Education or by any Government agency. An "official exam of Italian as second language" simply does not exist.
scuolatoscana has chosen the exams of A.I.L., Accademia Italiana di Lingua, because:

A.I.L. Diploma examinations in written and spoken Italian for the various ability levels are held four times a year in the homologated examination centres (scuolatoscana is one of them):
| DELI | Diploma Elementare di Lingua Italiana "Firenze" AIL The Diploma of the Italian Language at basic level, may be passed at the end of the 1st ability level. By passing this examination in Italian language, the candidate has shown that he is able to understand the main structures of the Italian language.
